Kids Talk Radio reporter Kenny McCulley had an opportunity to interview Melissa Morgan just before she received a very special Heritage Award. We have been following Melissa for about a year and she is doing fantastic things for the city of Long Beach.
Kids Talk Radio sent reporters to The Aquarium of the Pacific’s African Heritage Festival. This was a celebration of music, story, and art in African American culture. The Kids Talk Radio news team had lots of fun covering the sights, sounds, and special interviews of artists, dancer, musicians, aquarium staff, and the citizens of Long Beach. We won’t miss this event next year.
The official Aquarium of the Pacific literature read as follows:
Accepting the Heritage Award this year is Melissa Morgan, who serves as the Human Dignity Officer for the City of Long Beach. Among numerous accomplishments in this role, Morgan oversees programs to promote cultural awareness and unity, coordinates the City’s Youth and Gang Violence Prevention Task Force, provides education to prevent hat crimes and to encourage healing, and manages the administration of the City’s Hate Crime Response Team. She coordinated a two-month long city-wide campaign call A Season for Nonviolence. She also co-founded and co-sponsored Peace Week, which included a Peace Month, Peace Awards and participation in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and Celebration. Morgan also secured $400,000 of funding for the Long Beach Gang Reduction, Intervention, and Prevention Project. Morgan is also co-chair of The Unity Festival and ArtPEACE and works in association with the Homeland Cultural Center.
